Women and Cosmetics

Famous women of history used unusual concoctions to maintain their “beauty” — Cleopatra bathed in donkey’s milk, Mary Queen of Scots bathed in wine, and Isabeau of France rubbed her skin with crocodile glands.  In addition, for thousands of years women slowly poisoned themselves by wearing face makeup called ceruse, which was a deadly lead powder. To top it off, they used a rouge made from mercury, which lead to birth defects and miscarriages.

Before you draw harsh conclusions, you should recall that millions of people every year have their faces injected with botulism toxin to remove wrinkles.  We may think people from the past are bizarre, but sometimes we are too!
