Leonard and I went to game 1 of the Federal Hockey League finals last night to watch the Dayton Demonz do battle against the Danbury Whalers. We took our seats at Hara Arena center ice in row K to watch an exciting game… And then something unusual happened: an errant puck went flying up in the stands near our seats. In fact, the puck bounced off 5 different seats 20 feet apart before it landed squarely on the seat adjacent to Len (as if a supernatural force had placed it there). Using a subtle approach that he learned from his grandfather, Len calmly picked up the puck and placed it in his pocket.
Now if you’ve never been to a hockey game, you have to understand that a puck flying into the stands is a signal for people of all ages to act as if someone declared that gold has been discovered in the arena. People dive over one another to take ownership of the $5 piece of vulcanized rubber… Thus, since no one ‘discovered’ the missing puck, there were at least 20 fans scurrying under every seat near us for at least five minutes searching for that game souvenir… and Leonard just smiled.
