Interesting Factoid #5
Sunday, February 27th, 2011 | Author:

Early politicians required feedback from the public to determine what the people considered important. Since there were no telephones, TV’s or radios, the politicians sent their assistants to local taverns, pubs, and bars. They were told to ‘go sip some ale’ and listen to people’s conversations and political concerns.

Many assistants were dispatched at different times. ‘You go sip here’ and ‘You go sip there.’ The two words ‘go sip’ were eventually combined when referring to the local opinion and, thus we have the term ‘gossip.’

Interesting Factoid #4

Personal hygiene left much room for improvement. As a result, many women and men had developed acne scars by adulthood. The women would spread bee’s wax over their facial skin to smooth out their complexions.

When they were speaking to each other, if a woman began to stare at another woman’s face she was told, ‘mind your own bee’s wax.’ Should the woman smile, the wax would crack, hence the term ‘crack a smile’. In addition, when they sat too close to the fire, the wax would melt . . . Therefore, the expression ‘losing face.’

This is a good one from my buddy, Slick.   It illustrates how ‘nicely’ some parents take care of their children…

I’m using a WordPress plugin to automate the creation of Tweets from my posting on the DZ Sokol Blog…  It appears to be a really neat integration, but we’ll see how it goes.

Capitalism vs Socialism in the US Heartland
Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011 | Author:

It’s hard to ignore what is happening in Wisconsin and Ohio … The Governors of these respective states are working to reduce deficits by cutting the largess that has been provided to unionized government workers for the past 20 years.   In response, the unions (with the support of Obama) are out in full force protecting their ill-gotten rewards.

There are some important facts that are difficult for the pampered government bureaucrats to rationalize: most private industry workers are typically paying 25% of their insurance premiums, while most unionized public sector employees are paying less than 10%.  In addition, nearly all private sector workers must contribute a portion of their salaries to their own retirement plans, while government employees often retire with a taxpayer-funded pension before age 60.

The taxpayers of Wisconsin and Ohio are tired of the “Manchurian Socialism” and made that statement with their votes in November.  The next few weeks are very important for our country.  Mr. Walker and Mr. Kasich can lead us with a re-birth of Capitalism in the heartland of America, or we could see Socialism prevail.  The outcome will have a tremendous impact on our nation’s future.

Best Tennis Point Ever
Monday, February 21st, 2011 | Author:

I’ll admit that I’m one of the first to criticize Andy Roddick for his sometime lackadaisical play.  Rather than hustle for tough shots, he often just watches it pass for an easy winner.

You have to watch this video for one of the best points in tennis that I’ve ever seen.   Andy makes a diving play (on a hard court) for match point in the finals!  You couldn’t choreograph this ending to a tough match any better…

Supporting a Family
Sunday, February 20th, 2011 | Author:

The prospective father-in-law asked, “young man, can you support a family?”
The surprised groom-to-be replied, “well, no. I was just planning to support your daughter. The rest of you will have to fend for yourselves.”
