For those of you that have elected to spend your hard earned dollars on alternative fueled automobiles, you should stop to read the article in Popular Mechanics. The story specifically focuses on the ability to use hydrogen as a substitute for standard fossil fuels. Unfortunately, while the use of hydrogen is cleaner the petroleum-based combustion engines, the current methods of production of hydrogen produce tremendous amounts of carbon dioxide.
While we can no longer afford the environmental, economic and political drawbacks of oil-based energy, we’re still a few years away from viable alternative energy sources. Ultimately, there will probably be a whole suite of energy alternatives but each of them will involve investing heavily in new infrastructure.
