The relationship between American Jews and the state of Israel is very complex and forever evolving. American Jews have become increasingly indistinguishable in their political behavior from non-Jewish Americans who share their sociology: Non-Orthodox Jews poll and vote just like secular, educated, middle-to-upper class liberal Democrats who are not Jewish. There are no high-priority public-policy issues that political strategists can identify as “Jewish” issues. The State of Israel, for example, is a high-ranking voting issue for only 10% of American Jews.
Given my personal experiences, I would have to agree with their assessment.

Joel Kotkin notes in a commentary today that the western powers have turned their backs on the Jews. American Jews confront a rising wave of anti-Semitism unseen since the 1930s.
This merging of Jewish and Israeli interests seems inevitable. Already, a majority of all Jewish children live in Israel. By 2030, Israel could become, for the first time since early antiquity, the home to a majority of all Jews. This is somewhat hard to digest for left-of-centre or secular Jews, given the nature of the current Israeli government with its dependence on messianic nationalistic and ultra-religious allies.

ADL filed an amicus brief in the upcoming Supreme Court case, Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard, supporting the college’s discriminatory practices against the petitioning Asian students. ADL rationalized the college’s behavior on the thin grounds that it’s really discriminating for Black people, rather than against Asians (and, it must be recognized, against most Jews) Even though that’s a distinction without a difference to applicants seeking coveted spots in a limited pool, for the ADL it’s enough of a hook on which to hang its proverbial hat.

- We oppose any discrimination, because discrimination is wrong.
- A hundred years ago, Harvard discriminated against Jews because they weren’t “White”. Now, Harvard discriminates against most Jews because they are “White”. As a champion of Jews victimized by discrimination, and a champion of fair treatment for all, the ADL opposes discrimination in any guise under any rationale.
- Today’s legally rationalized racial discrimination has become fatally entwined with rank anti-Semitism, and Jews won’t be safe, comfortable, or welcome on campus until that poisonous ideology and the “diversity” industry that feeds it are defeated.
An interesting editorial from Rabbi Michael Barclay about the “secularization” of various American Jewish organizations, such as the Los Angeles Jewish Home and Jewish Vocational Services, which are moving away from focusing on Jewish interests:

The ADL is back in the news again making a hard push against Republicans. The ADL is circulating a petition among Jewish organizations urging them to criticize President Trump. The ADL is similar to many of the pusillanimous Leftist Jewish organizations attempting to curry favor with the Goyim… Caroline Glick summarizes it well:

This avowed leftist was formerly the head of a HIAS, an organization that has metamorphosed into an immigration funnel responsible for bringing the avowed enemies of the Jewish people into the US — namely Middle Eastern Moslems. Consider Bernie Sanders’ essay last week on “How to Fight Anti-Semitism” at the Jewish Currents website. It offered no instruction on fighting anti-Semitism, but instead alternated between criticizing Israel and pretending anti-Semitism doesn’t exist on the left.
Sanders limited all discussion of anti-Semitism to fringe white nationalists. He even blamed regular attacks on Jews in Brooklyn on the ideology of a “whites-only America.” In reality, as Armin Rosen reported in an exposé for Tablet, “the perpetrators who have been recorded on CCTV cameras are overwhelmingly black and Hispanic.”
Meanwhile, in the UK, many Jews that used to support the Labor Party (roughly comparable to the US Democrats) have finally figured out that support for the Labor Party is suicidal.

The resolution blasting Israel’s purported role in furthering white supremacy was authored by David Mandel, an elected state Assembly delegate and progressive attorney… he suggested, Israel officials did bear some indirect responsibility for both anti-Semitic and Islamophobic violence.

Some of the draft resolutions would mandate that Democrat officials work to “nullify” President Trump’s pro-Israel policies. One document directs party officials to take a subsidized trip to Israel only “if they undertake to devote an equal amount of time to visiting Palestinian towns, villages and refugee camps in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories.”
This position is reflective of one of the oldest tactics used by anti-Semites: “It’s the Jews’ fault that we’re killing them”.

Well, here you go. A commentary from a hard core leftist American Jew with a distorted view of reality. He proclaims that any American Jew that does not support the position of the Democrat Socialists is — get this one — “a collaborator in white supremacy”.
Yet even as white nationalists wish us dead, a shocking number of Jews have become willing collaborators in white supremacy — not only public bigots such as Ben Shapiro and David Horowitz, but kapos in the openly ethnonationalist Trump regime, such as Stephen Miller or Jared Kushner.

It’s going to become interesting to see how the American Jews that provide blanket support for the Democrats rationalize their political party’s emerging positions of strong anti-Semitism. An example is New York Senator Charles Schumer, who in 2017 came out publicly to properly exclaim that anti-Zionism is a reinvented form of anti-Semitism.
“The idea that all other peoples can seek and defend their right to self-determination but the Jewish people cannot; that other nations have a right to exist but the Jewish State of Israel does not, that, too, is a modern form of anti-Semitism”
Now with two Democrat Moslems in the House of Representatives that are avowed enemies of the Jewish people, it’s going to become more difficult for Jews to ignore the obvious conflicts. At this point, Schumer and most of the Democrat Jews just attempt to sweep the aggressive statements made by their peers under the table.

Ellman is the the mother of Women’s March staffer Sophie Ellman-Golan and Kleinbaum works at New York’s LGBTQ synagogue, Congregation Beit Simchat Torah. Grant and Wiener both work at the New York campus of the Reform movement’s Hebrew Union College.

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) sought to grill Brian Buescher, a federal district court nominee from Nebraska, by submitting questions for the record that singled him out because he is a member of the Knights of Columbus… rather than probe Buescher’s qualifications for the bench, the question seemed aimed at creating a religious test that could potentially brand anyone who subscribed to Catholic teachings as off-limits for high office.
I don’t know why he is surprised. The Jewish Left isn’t concerned about any religion, much less do they care about Catholicism or Judaism.

Beinart writes that the “BDS movement doesn’t officially oppose the existence of a Jewish state, but some of its most prominent advocates do.” So leaders of the movement want to destroy Israel, but the movement isn’t tainted by them? A Synagogue in Minnesota is at the center of controversy in the Jewish community for their decision to host an anti-Jewish, pro-Hamas Muslim candidate for a political forum this month… As if Sarsour’s lengthy resume of prolonged Jew hatred isn’t enough of a reason for Jewish organizations to distance themselves from her or anyone associated with her, she was also photographed smiling in front of a swastika, the symbol of the Nazis who killed six million Jews during the Holocaust…
It is worth noting that JCRC (Jewish Community Relations Council) chose to not denounce Omar and her anti-Israel pro-Hamas rhetoric and positions.
The Leftist Jew always believes in the Neville Chamberlain principle of “I’ll be nice to my enemies, and then they will be nice to me”. The reality is that for the lack of any backbone, the enemy instead chooses to kill you.

When two of the Jewish community’s most celebrated writers, Michael Chabon and his wife Ayelet Waldman [Note: I’ve never heard of either of these writers], write an open letter stating that: “Any Jew, anywhere, who does not act to oppose President Donald Trump and his administration acts in favor of anti-Semitism…” [If they’re leftist Jews, I’m sure that their ancestors also disliked capitalism and supported the National Socialist Party in Germany].

Even though I have undergraduate and graduate degrees in engineering, computer science, and accounting, I often describe myself as a ‘Hillbilly Jew’. This means that I am about as far away from the leftist American Jewish outlook that you can possibly get. I grew up in Southwest Ohio, the son of an Israeli father and a Zionist mother, who sent me to a Jewish elementary school. Other than learning about Judaism, my early life was about playing ice hockey, racing motocross, and shooting guns — all activities that are very foreign to most American Jews.
My family is tired of hearing me complain about Leftist Jews, but I’ve starting noticing other writers that have also grown weary of the American VAJINOs (Very Abrasive Jews In Name Only). The VAJINOs believe that their primary mission in life is to support the social justice warriors (including those that hate Jews and Israel):
I want a divorce from the liberal and progressive American Jewish community. From those American Jews who believe that they have a special right to judge and advise the state of Israel because their parents were Jewish.

Progressive American Jews are no different from progressive American non-Jews. You read the same New York Times and listen to the same NPR on your way to work. You voted (twice) for the same Barack Obama and hate the same Donald Trump just as passionately. For many of you, it would not be a personal tragedy if Israel were destroyed.

It is hard to know how Israel will be affected by the dramatic enfeeblement of the American Jewish community that we are now witnessing. The fact remains that the vast majority of American support for Israel comes from the evangelical Christian community.
What is clear enough though is that the political waning of the Jewish community across the political spectrum means that the golden era of American Jewry is not only over. It is gone.

Defending Israel to an unsympathetic president from the Democratic Party is apparently too much to ask most pro-Israel American Jews to do.
And this is where Shavit’s book comes in.
By portraying Israel as a country that is morally deficient, Shavit gave the American Jewish community two gifts. First he gave them a way to feel morally superior, and therefore patronizing toward Israel. Israel, they can say, committed a massacre – and did so because its founding ideology is poisonous. American Jews would never do such a thing. But out of the kindness of their hearts, like Shavit, they will continue to love this unworthy cousin.
The second gift Shavit gave the American Jewish community was the ability to feel comfortable refusing to be inconvenienced for Israel.
