The Gaza Syndrome

Moshe Arens, former Israeli Defense Minister, writes an editorial in Haaretz about the situation in Gaza: “There is something about Gaza that almost inevitably leads to mistaken judgments by Israeli decision makers…it became clear that if we refused to go looking for the terrorists in Gaza, they would come looking for us.”  I share Dr. Arens pragmatic viewpoint that the Palestinians only understand force.  Sending artillery shells into vacant fields, blowing up power stations, and destroying empty offices are not very effective deterrents to terrorism.
